In July 2023, Mokpo City and Jeonnam Information and Culture Industry Promotion Agency were finally selected in the Ministry of Science and ICT (Radio Promotion Association) hosted "2023 Metaverse Leading Project" regional specialized metaverse service development task public offering for the theme "Digital Island and Sea Garden Service Development." The "Metaverse Leading Project" is a project to develop leading metaverse services that will bring citizen benefit improvement and industry innovation in daily life, public, and regional fields. To activate the regional economy through metaverse service development for island and marine tourism in Mokpo City, Sinan County, and Yeosu City, 3.7 billion KRW in total including 1.6 billion KRW in national funds will be invested over 2 years until 2024. The island-sea metaverse tourism concept: users can virtually explore islands and sea gardens of the South Sea region -- experiencing marine environments, traditional island culture, and natural scenery through VR before deciding to visit in person; the pre-visit virtual experience is designed to increase actual tourism by reducing uncertainty about destination choices; simultaneously, the digital documentation of these environments creates permanent records of island culture and ecology that may change over time. The regional economic activation goal: by attracting tourists to lesser-known island destinations in the Mokpo-Sinan area (which is geographically challenging to access), the metaverse service can distribute tourism benefits more broadly than current tourist patterns where visitors concentrate in easily accessible locations.
