Realistic Immersive Experience, Perfect Implementation of Real-World Systems
User-Generated Content, Enormous Economic Value
New Regulations and Laws, Enormous Uncertainty

Source: Deloitte Insights 2022 No. 23 "Invitation to the Metaverse -- A Land of Opportunity." Six characteristics of the metaverse compared to current internet platforms: (1) Realistic Immersive Experience: the metaverse provides presence -- the feeling of actually being in the virtual environment rather than observing it on a screen; VR technology creates this through stereoscopic display, spatial audio, and motion tracking; full presence enables social interaction that 2D video cannot replicate (body language, spatial awareness, shared physical context); (2) Perfect Implementation of Real-World Systems: economic systems (currency, property ownership, contracts), social systems (identity, reputation, community governance), and institutional systems (organizations, platforms, standards) are all reimplemented in the virtual environment; blockchain enables these systems to function without a central controlling authority; (3) User-Generated Content (UGC): the primary content in mature metaverse platforms is created by users, not the platform itself; Roblox 50M+ user-created games demonstrate UGC scale; the creative economy where users build and monetize virtual goods and experiences is the engine of metaverse growth; (4) Enormous Economic Value: real money changes hands for virtual goods, experiences, and real estate; Roblox virtual goods economy generated 700M+ USD in developer payments in 2024; the economic value created is real even if the assets are virtual; (5) New Regulations and Laws: existing legal frameworks (property law, intellectual property, contract law, consumer protection) were designed for the physical world and fit poorly to virtual environments; jurisdiction questions (which country law applies in a globally accessible virtual world?), digital property rights, and avatar rights are emerging legal questions; (6) Enormous Uncertainty: the trajectory of technology adoption, the dominant platforms, the winning business models, and the social implications of widespread metaverse adoption are all deeply uncertain; strategic planning must account for multiple scenarios rather than assuming a single metaverse future will materialize.
