Source: Deloitte Insights 2022 No. 23 "Invitation to the Metaverse -- A Land of Opportunity." Five obstacles blocking metaverse development: (1) Portability of virtual world access devices: current VR headsets are too heavy, expensive, and have limited battery life for sustained daily use; the device must reach smartphone-level portability and price before mass adoption is possible; Apple Vision Pro (launched 2024 at 3,499 USD) represents premium capability but poor portability; the target is glasses-weight devices at sub-500 USD price points -- a 5-10 year technology development challenge; (2) Governance norms of the virtual world: who makes the rules in the metaverse? platform operators (centralized), token holders (DAO), or governments (regulation)?; the lack of agreed governance frameworks creates legal uncertainty that slows enterprise investment; cross-border jurisdiction is particularly complex -- which country law applies to a dispute between users in different countries on a global platform?; (3) Industrial use limitations: most current metaverse applications are entertainment/gaming rather than industrial; the ROI case for enterprise metaverse investment is not yet compelling for most industries; exceptions exist (training simulations, digital twins, architecture visualization) but mass enterprise adoption requires demonstrating reliable productivity improvement; (4) Information security and personal information protection: metaverse environments collect far more sensitive biometric data than current platforms (eye tracking, hand movement, spatial behavior, voice); the regulatory framework for protecting this data does not yet exist at the level needed; (5) Energy supply: high-fidelity VR/AR rendering requires substantial computing power; the energy cost of maintaining persistent metaverse environments at scale is significant; the carbon footprint of metaverse infrastructure must be addressed as sustainability becomes a business requirement.
