Gyeongbuk Office of Education announced it will operate the "2024 Academic Year 2nd Semester Metaverse English Classroom with Native Speakers" for 420 students from 4th grade elementary through 3rd grade middle school in the province from next month 4th to 21st for 3 weeks. This program is operated in a team teaching format with a native English teaching assistant and Korean responsible teacher in a pair, using metaverse platform infrastructure with level-appropriate English original books (picture books) for real-time after-school evening classes. Students apply for courses by selecting textbooks (English original books) matching their level. The metaverse English classroom model: students from different schools across Gyeongbuk Province can participate in the same class simultaneously; native English teachers can reach students in rural areas without physically relocating to those schools; the virtual environment creates a more comfortable space for shy students to practice speaking English compared to face-to-face instruction; the evening time slot (after regular school hours) makes productive use of time that would otherwise be unstructured; the picture book curriculum provides natural context for language learning through narrative, which research shows produces better retention than grammar-focused instruction.
