Unstable Leadership Change Raises Concerns Over Technological Innovation Stagnation
From Havok Co-founder to Unity Exit
The Challenges Left by Technical Leadership Restructuring

On June 4, 2025, Unity Technologies' CTO Steve Collins reportedly resigned abruptly. Just six months earlier, he had been recruited as a key figure to lead Unity's technical transition, leveraging his experience at King and Havok, but departed after a brief tenure.

Collins joined Unity in October 2024 as Chief Technology Officer. He had made his name as CTO of Candy Crush developer King and co-founder of Havok, which established modern physics engine standards. Unity had announced plans for technical quality enhancement, AI-based real-time content innovation, and developer ecosystem rebuilding upon his recruitment.

Collins reportedly resigned for personal reasons. According to TechCrunch, the resignation is interpreted as a continuation of Unity's internal turmoil and management instability in recent years: the controversial fee policy change announcement in fall 2023, CEO John Riccitiello's resignation in late 2023, layoffs of 1,800 employees (25% of workforce) in early 2024, and ongoing efforts to rebuild trust through technical leadership restructuring.

Collins had been responsible for key technical strategies including developer experience improvement, game engine optimization, and expansion into XR and industrial sectors. His departure could create gaps in technical innovation continuity and strategic consistency — particularly in XR, AI simulation, and industrial real-time 3D technology. Unity has maintained competitive advantages through low barriers to entry and broad cross-platform compatibility compared to Unreal Engine, but repeated policy disruptions and personnel changes in recent years have been causing psychological disengagement in the developer community. Collins' departure may signal short-term "technical strategy confusion" and long-term "platform trust collapse."
