Dean Hyun Dae-won of Sogang University Graduate School of Metaverse was elected as the inaugural president of the International Metaverse Association (IMA) in October 2023. Senior Vice President is Professor Makana Chock of Syracuse University, USA. President Hyun, who contributed to the foundation of the metaverse industry as inaugural chairman of the Korea VR Industry Association (established 2015) and led establishment of the world's first graduate school specialized in metaverse, has been working to achieve international cooperation on self-regulation system establishment. In October of this year, the IMA General Assembly and 2024 Global Metaverse Conference (GMC) were held at Seoul's aT Center — gathering domestic and international scholars, government officials, and industry experts to envision metaverse in the Web 3.0 era and Korea's future, and present visions for building an ethical and innovative metaverse ecosystem. Keynotes by Professor Sam Richards (Penn State University) on "Metaverse and Korea's Future" — emphasizing Korea should lead the metaverse market in the Web 3.0 era as a society prioritizing community and greater benefit with potential to be a Web 3.0 leader.
