US EV maker Lucid is joining hands with Uber to mass-produce autonomous robotaxis. They have signed a supply contract for 20,000 electric SUVs for autonomous robotaxis and a $300M strategic investment agreement. This is being evaluated as a major deal that could significantly change the future competitive landscape of the EV, mobility, and autonomous driving industries.
According to an SEC Form 8-K filing, Lucid and Uber signed a "Vehicle Production Agreement (VPA)" on July 16, 2025, for supply of 20,000+ autonomous driving SUVs "Lucid Gravity Plus" starting H2 2026 for 6 years. Under this VPA, Uber, its subsidiaries, and affiliated operators will purchase a minimum of 20,000 Gravity Plus units starting 2026 to use as autonomous robotaxis. The Lucid Gravity Plus is an electric SUV with autonomous driving hardware and Uber custom specifications, with autonomous driving software being developed by US autonomous driving startup Nuro — three companies collaborating closely to advance an actual robotaxi service. Minimum purchase guarantees are contingent on Lucid meeting certain quality, production volume, and delivery requirements.
Separately, Uber''s subsidiary SMB Holding also signed an investment agreement (Subscription Agreement), purchasing $300M of Lucid Class A Common Stock (with 18-month lock-up period after investment). Funds raised will be used for robotaxi vehicle development, production, delivery non-recurring engineering costs, and general company operations. Both investment and production agreements require US/international regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. This Lucid-Uber agreement signals the full-scale convergence of EVs, mobility, and autonomous driving: Uber gains its first agreement promising actual EV SUV supply in large quantities; Lucid finds additional growth momentum through B2B strategy differentiated from Tesla and Rivian; Nuro gets the opportunity to test its autonomous driving technology at a large-scale commercial service level. If successful, Uber establishes itself as a large-scale robotaxi platform operator, and Lucid expands from vehicle manufacturer to autonomous mobility solution provider. Industry attention focuses on whether actual "Gravity Plus" robotaxis can be encountered on the US Uber platform starting H2 2026.
