Navigation, Voice Utilization, and Lens Integration Expanded with 'Gemini' Integration in Google Maps

Google is integrating generative AI Gemini into Google Maps in earnest, elevating the role of map services one step. The vision is to extend the use of generative AI that had remained in place search and recommendations to navigation and voice interaction while driving domains.

Google is also changing the navigation guidance method. Instead of existing distance-centered guidance, it uses Street View data combined with Gemini to explain routes based on clearly visible landmarks. Guidance is provided that can be intuitively recognized in actual driving environments like "turn right after passing the gas station" rather than "turn right after 500 meters." For this, Gemini cross-analyzes information on 250 million registered places with Street View images to utilize buildings and facilities identifiable on the road as reference points.

Functions targeting pedestrians and tourists are also added. Google Maps linked Google Lens with Gemini so that users can point their camera at surrounding buildings or restaurants and ask questions like "What is this place and why is it famous?" This is a function targeting demand for immediately grasping surrounding information in unfamiliar areas, bundling map, camera, and generative AI into one experience.

Launch proceeds in stages. Traffic notifications and some voice functions apply first to Android users in the United States, and landmark-based navigation is provided first on iOS and Android in the United States. Lens and Gemini integration functions will also debut in the United States first before expanding. Google also announced Android Auto support.

This integration clearly shows Google Maps' direction. A transition from a map where search terms are entered to select results, to an AI platform that understands movement situations and assists decision-making. Google explained that "Maps is developing beyond simple route guidance to AI-based services that understand and help users' overall movement." As generative AI deeply integrates with maps, navigation is increasingly becoming an 'experience of asking questions and conversing.'
