The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it will co-host with the Ministry of National Defense the "2024 High-Level Meeting on Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Military Sector (2024 REAIM High-Level Meeting)" at Lotte and Westin Chosun Hotels in Seoul on September 9-10 (Monday-Tuesday). The Netherlands, Singapore, Kenya, and the UK are participating as co-host countries. The high-level meeting will include over 2 days: main sessions (3 plenary sessions, 47 small group meetings, 2 special sessions), ministerial sessions (high-level luncheon and government representative roundtable), and side events (AI company exhibition, youth participation events). The REAIM significance: Responsible AI in the Military is one of the most consequential AI governance questions globally -- AI is being integrated into surveillance, targeting, logistics, and command systems by all major military powers; the first REAIM meeting (The Hague, 2023) established the concept; Seoul hosting the second meeting reflects Korea diplomatic positioning in AI governance; the 47 small group meetings and broad country participation suggest genuine technical engagement rather than pure diplomatic exercise; key issues include autonomous weapons systems regulation, AI decision-making accountability in military contexts, and dual-use AI technology governance.
