Samsung Electronics has produced a chairperson for the Radio Access Network Technical Standards Group (TSG RAN) at the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) world mobile communications technology standards organization -- laying the groundwork to lead next-generation mobile communications technology standardization. 3GPP announced at the "RAN Technical General Assembly" held in Incheon on the 12th that Samsung Electronics Samsung Research Kim Yun-seon Master was elected as TSG RAN chairperson. 3GPP, established in 1998, is a world mobile communications technology standardization organization where Samsung Electronics, Apple, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Qualcomm, and global mobile communications companies and organizations participate to lead mobile communications technology standard establishment. The 6G standardization significance: TSG RAN chairperson presides over the committee defining physical layer and radio access standards -- the most fundamental technical layer of mobile communications; Samsung having this chair during the 6G standardization period (3GPP Release 20 and beyond, expected 2025-2028) provides significant influence over how 6G radio technology is defined; the standards Samsung helps establish will determine which technologies are included in 6G, affecting which Samsung patents become essential (and therefore licensable) for all 6G device manufacturers worldwide.
