The Hyperscaler''s New Strategy Was ''the Sun''

Meta has again chosen the sun to solve the power problem of the AI era. On May 21, 2025, US global power company AES officially announced a 650MW solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with Meta. The power will be produced in Texas (400MW) and Kansas (250MW) and supplied through the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) market.

This contract is part of Meta's strategy to procure all the massive power needed for its AI data centers from 100% renewable energy, serving as a key pillar for achieving Meta's carbon neutrality vision. AES CEO Andrés Gluski stated "with rapid power deployment speed and low unit costs, AES is positioning itself as the energy partner for companies driving AI innovation." Meta evaluated it as producing "the dual effect of realizing 100% renewable energy goals while adding new generation capacity to local grids."

Why solar for AI infrastructure? Three reasons: (1) Fast construction possibility — solar plants can be commercially operated within months, with Texas permitting and grid connection speed enabling flexible response to data center expansion; (2) Cost competitiveness — solar boasts the world's lowest new power supply unit costs; (3) Phased power delivery structure — partial plants can operate before full project completion, securing stability and flexibility. AES operates 32.7GW of generation capacity with 10.1GW in long-term contracts with global tech companies — 7.7GW for AI data center renewable energy supply to Meta, Google, and Amazon. Bloomberg New Energy Finance selected AES as "Top Clean Energy Supplier for Corporations" for three consecutive years. Local impact: hundreds of construction jobs in Texas and Kansas, millions in long-term local tax revenue supporting schools and public services. "As AI brains grow, the heart of the sun is needed."
