"AI Writing Detectors Blocked by the Wall of Reliability"

July 2023: OpenAI officially discontinued its AI-written text classifier. Behind the announcement lies the cold reality of "insufficient reliability." January 2023: OpenAI launched an AI classifier distinguishing human and AI-written text -- in response to social demand for distinguishing who wrote what as generative AI like GPT-3 and ChatGPT became mainstream. Education sectors expected it for detecting student AI misconduct; media for filtering fake news. But July 20, 2023: OpenAI announced discontinuation of the classifier service due to "low accuracy." OpenAI stated: "The AI classifier is no longer available. We continue researching to find reliable detection technology." Technical limitations: the detector was accurate at approximately 26% rate -- meaning it missed 74% of AI-written text; the false positive rate (flagging human-written text as AI) was significant enough to create unfair harm to students and other writers; as AI writing improves to be more human-like, and as humans increasingly write in styles influenced by AI training data, the distinction becomes genuinely difficult to detect by pattern analysis. The philosophical challenge: even if a technical AI detector existed, what exactly would "AI-written" mean -- text fully generated by AI with no human editing? Text that uses AI for brainstorming? Text where an AI wrote a draft that a human substantially revised? These definitional questions suggest that detection is not a path to solving the core question of evaluating authentic intellectual engagement.
