OpenAI video generation platform "Sora" officially introduced Extra Generation purchases on November 2, 2025. OpenAI product overall lead Bill Peebles stated on X: "The 30 free generation limit has reached its limit -- this is the first step toward a sustainable economic model and creator monetization." Until now, Sora provided 30 daily free generations with explosive popularity. However, actual professional creators had raised complaints about generation limits due to GPU resource constraints. This measure signals OpenAI entering "an experiment designing the economic system of AI content" -- not simply monetization. The Sora Economy vision: (1) Economic sustainability -- high-quality video generation requires enormous GPU resources; the free model was a customer acquisition strategy, not a sustainable business; (2) Creator and rights holder-centered economy -- rather than Netflix model (centralized content, one subscription price), Sora is pursuing a "YouTube economy" where creators can earn from content they generate. The monetization structure: users can purchase additional generation credits beyond the free tier; professional creators get higher priority access; a rights marketplace framework where human creators can license their style/content for AI training and generation, earning royalties when their trained style is used. Why "YouTube not Netflix": Netflix acquires content rights; YouTube builds platform economics where creators own distribution and monetization. OpenAI is betting that the former will not scale but the latter creates the flywheel effect of content quality improvement through creator investment.
