I am spending a peaceful day. Not different from usual. Chatting with classmates while attending class in graduate school. A peaceful daily routine. While spending time that way, I suddenly recalled that I am married and looked around. But my appearance here was not the married version of me. "Huh??? I cannot see my family???" I was confused. As if panic disorder rushed in, I could not breathe and ran to the bathroom. I felt my field of vision narrowing. Like the stopping of consciousness felt during a sedated endoscopy. "Mom, what is today date?" "October 2nd." Mom shows me a calendar and tells me. Mom and dad look younger. I am lying on my side. From the shape of objects spread before my eyes, I can recognize I am lying on my side. "Ah... it was a dream." I thought I had just had a dream for a moment. But the me lying here was not an adult who had graduated graduate school and gotten married. The me here was a middle school or high school student. And that is when I realized. I am dreaming inside a dream. The multiverse meditation: this experience of nested dreams (a dream within a dream) raises the same philosophical questions as multiverse theory -- which version is real? If you can be simultaneously a graduate student and a middle school student in different dream-realities, which is the authentic you? The author connects this disorienting experience to contemporary physics speculations about parallel universes and to the metaverse question of which identity is primary when a person maintains multiple digital identities across different virtual worlds.
