Impact of Virtual Idols
Comment Comparison Analysis of BTS and Isedol
As the metaverse develops, entertainment elements are also evolving together. Virtual humans and virtual characters -- core elements of the metaverse -- are creating new ways of interaction, especially in the entertainment industry. BTS vs. Isedol (이세계아이돌, a virtual K-pop group) YouTube comment comparison: text mining analysis of adjective usage patterns in comments on YouTube content from both groups reveals differences in how fans emotionally engage with real vs. virtual idols. BTS comment characteristics: adjectives focused on real emotional connection (moved, touched, grateful, proud), references to personal experiences and memories, directness of parasocial relationship language (references to BTS as if personally known). Isedol (virtual idol) comment characteristics: more meta-awareness in comments (acknowledgment that they are virtual), more focus on performance quality and technical execution, language of appreciation for creativity and craft rather than personal connection, more community-focused language (shared fandom identity). The analytical insight: real idol fans experience parasocial intimacy (feeling of personal relationship with the idol); virtual idol fans experience aesthetic appreciation combined with community belonging; neither is less genuine, but the psychological mechanism differs in ways that have implications for content strategy, merchandise, and fan community management; as virtual humans become more sophisticated, the line between these two fan experience types may blur.
