Transition of a 38-Year Technical Conference to an Industry Platform,
From Developer Meeting to the Grand Plaza of the Gaming Industry

In 1988, GDC began as a small peer exchange among developers held in a living room. Through the 1990s and 2000s it grew into the representative event leading technical learning, post-mortems, and industry-wide dialogue. GDC''s rebranding from conference to festival reflects that the gaming industry has moved from a technology-centered industry to a complex ecosystem industry where investors, publishers, platforms, and media all gather.

A Widening Plaza, Narrowing Spaces
However, one question remains. The industry''s plaza is widening, but where does the developer''s seat — who first created this plaza — stand now? For GDC to become a true "festival," not only industry connections but developer stability must be designed together.
