"AI Does Not Replace Creators"
Netflix acquired InterPositive -- an AI technology company specializing in film production -- founded by actor and director Ben Affleck. Netflix formalized its strategy to expand investment in creator-centered AI production technology. Netflix announced via its newsroom on March 6 that the entire InterPositive team is joining Netflix; Ben Affleck will participate as Senior Advisor, continuing involvement in film production AI tool development. Netflix emphasized that technological innovation should develop to support creators, not replace storytelling. InterPositive AI approach: different from general generative AI -- built datasets based on actual film production environments; Affleck recreated film shooting environments in controlled soundstages, collecting data specialized for film production including camera lens distortion, lighting changes, shooting angles, and editing flow. This design enables AI to understand the logic of cinematography and editing rather than simply generating images. Applications: supplementing missed scenes, correcting backgrounds, fixing lighting errors, maintaining visual consistency across scenes in editing. Netflix acquisition strategy: rather than generic video generation (Sora, Seedance), investing in production-process-integrated AI that helps professional filmmakers make better films faster -- positioning AI as an efficiency multiplier for existing creative workflows rather than a creative replacement. The creator-trust dimension: with Hollywood guilds having negotiated AI usage agreements, Netflix acquiring a company founded by a working filmmaker signals intent to position its AI strategy as creator-aligned rather than creator-threatening.
