Immersive gaming and creative platform Roblox announced it will participate as a founding partner of the nonprofit foundation "ROOST (Robust Open Online Safety Tools)" initiative. Roblox stated that promoting safety and good manners has been its foundation for the past 20 years, and expressed pleasure at participating as a founding partner of the ROOST initiative to broaden its influence in online safety. Roblox is continuously exploring opportunities to open-source its AI models to contribute to strengthening safety across online communities beyond just platform-level safety. This journey began when Roblox open-sourced an audio safety classification model with 94 million parameters in 2024 -- the model processes up to 400,000 hours of active voice daily within the platform, detecting policy violations more accurately than human moderators for millions of minutes of voice activity per day. The ROOST founding partners -- Google, OpenAI, and Roblox -- reflect a cross-sector coalition recognizing that online safety tools are more effective as open shared infrastructure than as proprietary competitive advantages; a child safety detection model that works across all platforms is more protective than separate models on each platform; ROOST enables smaller platforms that cannot afford to develop their own safety AI to access quality tools; the open-source approach also enables independent security researchers to audit the models for bias and effectiveness.
